Emma has been working with MovePlan since 2018. During her gap year in Australia, she took a role working on reception at EY in Sydney.
An organiser and planner at heart, her skills caught the attention of the project move team at EY, who were planning a site move into a 32 story building at Circular Quay, involving more than 8,000 people. After just two weeks on reception, Emma moved into the project team.
Starting out as a Project Coordinator, Emma then progressed to Project Manager and then Senior Workplace Project Manager, the role she has been doing for the past one and a half years. She focuses mainly on the science sector, which is often very complex as it requires a lot of technical and scientific expertise.
“A lot of my training has been on the job, and I respond best that way, learning through practical means rather than studying the theory. The projects have allowed me to really learn by doing, to understand all the details of a project and the types of equipment that need to be moved. It can get very complex, especially when we are working with so many vendors just for one piece of equipment. For example, on a current project, we have over 10,000 pieces of equipment to move, and 161 vendors, and we will even have to consider who will need to disconnect the nitrogen in order to fulfil specific protocols – it’s that detailed!”

Emma’s role requires her to be regularly on site with a client and this is key to building strong, long term relationships.
“It becomes your job to really know how a business operates. You need to really get under the skin, understand the teams, what each unit does and how they fit into the overall project. It allows us to add value for the client. Context is king as this helps you understand the complexity of a project and see the bigger picture, so if someone wants to change a point in the process, I will know how it impacts further along the chain. This broader understanding of the business and the project itself is critical to the delivery of the project.”
The role includes a lot of travelling. Emma has spent long periods of time in Toronto, Rome, Belfast, Dublin, and London, to name a few. “I tend to move to where my projects are, though this isn’t for everyone so the company does take into account whether the project can complement your home life”.
